(Mark Ralston/Reuters)Reuters - Obesity levels in China are rising fast, with more than a quarter of the adult population overweight or obese. As people add more meat and dairy products to their diet, serious health problems can develop, a new study says.

Omega 3, 6, 9 are fats that come under the category of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Omega is the last in Greek alphabet and it indicates the last carbon in the chain. All these fatty acids contain one double bond of carbon atoms and the digits 3, 6 and 9 indicate how far away the omega carbon is from these double bonds.

It's not important to go into the details of their chemical makeup. It's enough to know that omega 3, 6, 9 fats are good fats and they are required for many functions of our body. Without them our immune system will become very weak, we will develop a lot of complicated diseases and will become victims of depression and other mental illnesses.

Because of this reason the importance of omega 3, 6, 9 fatty acids cannot be neglected. It's important to know that these are essential fatty acids. Our body is not capable of manufacturing its own omega 3 and other fats with the help of metabolic activities taking place inside the body.

These fats have to be consumed through diet or nutritional supplements. All of us need these fats to develop a healthy brain, to prevent cardiovascular disease and to cure degenerative illnesses.

These fats are also good for the cure of arthritis and cystitis because they have anti-inflammatory properties. They prove to be effective in skin conditions like acne, red bumps, and pock marks. Other illnesses like diabetes and gallstones can also be prevented by consuming large amounts of omega 3 and omega 6 fats on a regular basis.

Some of the food sources that contain these fats are fish oil, flax seed oil, soybean oil, corn oil, walnuts, tofu, navy beans and shrimps. There should be a balance of all these fats in our diet because they complement one another's functions and are required for the promotion of overall health.

Fish oil provides good amounts of omega 3 fats DHA and EPA. These fats are also added to infant nutrition formulas because they are required for proper development of the brain and the eyes. They are also connected with the prevention of colon, breast and prostate cancer.

Fish oil capsules and other omega 3 supplements can easily be found online. These products are available as over the counter drugs because they don't need a doctor's prescription. You can add them to your everyday diet to receive a good share of these fats on a regular basis.
